NOTES
WICKED! is about blood, violence, and weapons, about sex and genitals, bowels, bodily fluids, and decay. And yes, it is about design. It volatilely teases with physical and intense attractions and anxieties thrown onto everyday objects. One wonders: Who could I give it to?! From a distance we know how disgusting things can get, and usually we feel superiour to the wicked - or the bad taste. But it is thinkable for the observer to actually be revolting - to use objects and living beings in a way close to destruction, supression and decay. Just thinkable. For a moment. And then flip the page.
The leap it actually takes to realize what destruction and degradation are and how many other forms they take in our everyday lives needs quite a while. Our fascination with them is enjoyable from a distance. But right in the middle of the horror - of the waste of our energies - most of us would simply fold. In a hopeless, immobile situation that confronts us with our own destruction we do not know any answers.

Urban Green The ongoing renaissance of the inner city in recent years has not in any way lessened its inhabitants’ sense of longing for nature. On the contrary, inner-city solutions will increasingly need to be found to respond to this growing need. The book documents 27 recently completed examples in Europe, designed by internationally renowned landscape architects, such as Gustafson Porter, Michel Desvigne and West 8.

Recent Waterscapes After decades of being banished from cities and residential areas, water is now becoming an increasingly significant feature in urban design. Whether it is the integration of natural watercourses into the built environment, the incorporation of water elements in urban areas for climatic purposes or the creation of oases of tranquility or drama such as pools or fountains - these matters are not just of interest to architects and town planners, but also attract a lot of attention from the public. Recent Waterscapes discusses the range of aspects of working with water.

Mirei Shigemori – Rebel in the Garden The works of Mirei Shigemori (1896-1975) enables us to enter the realm of the modern karesansui garden, and to understand a significant shift towards nature that ha shappened in Japanese society over the past century. His sensitive and beautiful work offers us an approach to breaking away of immutable spheres, impermeable to change and innovation. Mirei Shigemori shows us how the spirit of natural elements, like rocks, are transmorgified into undulating waves of colored concrete, how rectangular checkers of stepping-stones dissolve into a background of moss and shrubs.
The gardens remain spiritual and respectful, but they reflect the radical changes in Japanese society. Shigemori artfully defines and connects the essential traditions of his culture to the changes he considered necessary. The many samples in this book show us how sensual he treated even massive changes and how effective they can be to our recognition. The fact that Shigemori has not been in touch with the western world, but concentrated on his local culture makes his approaches so interesting to anyone who needs get deeply involved in a certain area and find original solutions.

Landscape Infrastructure The integration of clean energy, mass-transit alternatives to car traffic, and changing attitudes about water conservation has changed our cities' approach to public infrastructures: it has created a new set of performance criteria for existing and proposed infrastructural corridors. Landscape Infrastructure deals with this paradigm shift by questioning the viability of our traditional single-purpose corridors that are networked across vast scales of public and private lands, serving the purposes of moving vehicles, electricity, water, and oil. SWA landscape architects and urban designers, with many case studies, propose a multifunctional approach that is more in tune with contemporary society.

Grüner Wohnen / Green Living How green do we want our housing to be? What are the essential criteria of a successful planning of open space in residential architecture? Will the changed relationship between city and country contribute to that, perhaps in the form of urban agriculture?
“They say that life is full of contradictions, full of desires and decisions, full of eithers, full of ors. But wouldn’t it be much nicer not to have to decide, but to bring together opposites, to fulfil more than one dream and simply to enjoy more? (…) Why do they say EITHER OR and not simply AND? (…) Career AND family. Work AND pleasure. City AND countryside. Is that really so hard? And is it too much to want more? In any case, we want one thing: a good life! A life in which there is room for many differ-ent things. And a place in which we can find one thing: a full life!”
